At least 95 people were killed in a powerful earthquake that rocked a hilly area of western China, according to Xinhua, the Chinese state news agency.

A strong earthquake strikes Tibet, leaving at least 95 confirmed dead and over three dozen injured.

The local disaster assistance organization reported that at least 130 more people were hurt. India and Nepal reportedly experienced tremors.

According to the US Geological Survey, the magnitude 7.1 earthquake’s center was around 10 kilometers deep in the Tibet region. The epicentre is roughly 380 kilometers away from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet.

The meeting point of the Indian and Eurasian plates was the epicentre. The region is extremely hazardous and has the potential to generate Himalayan mountain uplifts powerful enough to alter the elevations of some of the world’s greatest peaks.

According to Chinese state media, the average elevation in the vicinity of the epicentre is roughly 4,200 meters.

Only a few kilometers separate the epicentre from a few nearby settlements. The extent of the harm and devastation they endured is yet unknown.

Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, was said to have felt the earthquake. The tremor apparently woke up several of the locals, although it had little effect on them. The isolated, mountainous areas across the Nepalese border close to the epicentre were not immediately covered by any information.

According to the US Geological Survey, over ten earthquakes of a magnitude of at least six have occurred in this region in the last century.
