Mizoram Forms Core Committee To Address Rising HMPV Cases

Reacting to the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in India, Mizoram has been proactive in establishing a core group to address possible virus spread. Aimed at evaluating the situation and putting required precautions in place, the group was set up following a Tuesday conference headed by Health Minister Lalrinpuii.

Apart from the core committee, the state government has established a Rapid Response Team to keep an eye on advancements in every district. Despite worldwide concerns regarding HMPV, the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) released a public warning to comfort the people claiming that neither influenza-like sickness (ILI) nor severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) have been reported in Mizoram.

As part of increased monitoring, the health department has directed both public and private hospitals to daily report any ILI or SARI cases. Moreover, Mizoram keeps running its Pneumonia Control Program and SAANS campaign to lower respiratory problems.

To guarantee the efficient implementation of these policies, health authorities are urging public and provider participation. For early intervention, citizens are recommended to notify local health institutions or wellness centers any suspected ILI or SARI instances.

This action addresses two HMPV cases confirmed in Gujarat and Karnataka involving newborns in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. Given neither patient had no history of international travel, these cases have generated questions regarding local transmission. The World Health Organisation has not yet declared a worldwide health emergency despite the increase of HMPV cases all around.
