NSCN (K) Faction Issues Stern Warning Against India-Myanmar Border Fencing

KOHIMA: The Ang Mai-led faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) has been protesting against the activities of border fencing carried out along the India-Myanmar border in Naga-inhabited areas, arguing that such an activity is a direct threat to their unity and sovereignty.

“This is an illegal boundary,” the faction declared in a statement, condemning the establishment of the 1972 Indo-Myanmar boundary without the consent of the Naga people. It described the recent presence of a border survey team near Longwa village, which lies on the disputed border, as a “criminal act” and vowed to resist the activities using “all available means.”

The faction said that the boundary is a violation of the local and international laws. It warned survey teams and contractors, irrespective of nationality, against participating in any fencing-related work. “Any attempts to enforce or reinforce the boundary will unleash severe military actions,” they said.

The faction said that the ceasefire with the Indian government was being used to dilute their cause and asserted that there would be no further warnings on the issue. The group reiterated that it remained committed to the cause of protecting the interest of the Naga people.

The Ang Mai faction, which has a ceasefire deal with Myanmar’s military and is currently in negotiations with the Indian government, has been adamant against the proposed barrier along the 1,643-kilometer Indo-Myanmar border.

The project, which spans Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Mizoram, has generated a great deal of debate and raised grave worries about its possible danger to regional harmony and Naga sovereignty.
