Metsubo Jamir addressing the gathering during the Asangma Shisashir Telongjem Platinum Jubilee celebration.
Nagaland Minister for Rural Development & SIRD, Metsubo Jamir on Thursday said the purpose in attainment of knowledge and education for a student today should not be a futile exercise but rather to utilize it practically.
He was speaking as the chief guest on day-2 of the Asangma Shisashir Telongjem/Students’ Union (AST) Platinum Jubilee celebration at Asangma village on December 19. Jamir advised the students’ community to strive in becoming a leader in their own capacity.
The minister said that the life of a student today is extremely competitive, be it in the field of academics, sports or other related activities. Keeping this in mind, Jamir urged them to always strive for excellence and be passionate in achieving their goals.
In the development of a youth and most importantly a student, he noted that leadership skills need to be inculcated at this stage in their life. “In few years’ time, you will be the ones leading your community and society,” he reminded.
Adding further, “You have a lot of responsibilities ahead, on how to help carry forth your village, community and state; this does not mean that one must be tribalistic in their mind-set, but rather to be fair, unprejudiced and live in harmony with others”. Jamir urged them to have a vision for what holds in the future and seek wisdom and understanding from their elders. He also advised the students to not merely seek a job as a means for survival but rather to have ambition for what they can give back to their society.
The Minister extended his greetings and appreciation to the AST and its pioneers for marking 75 years of formation as a well-established student body.
Considering the occasion as a day of remembering the blessings bestowed upon them, Jamir assured of contributing funds toward the redevelopment of the village’s old football ground and also to assist in sponsoring free coaching classes for the students.
Advisor for Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, A Pangjung Jamir was also in attendance as the Jubilee host.
The advisor had earlier graced the occasion as the inaugural guest of the jubilee celebration on Wednesday night.
The presidential address was given by AST president, Moalong Lemtur, while a short message was shared by chairman of Asangma Village Council, I Kilang Jamir. Speeches were also delivered by president of Ao Kaketshi Mungdang (students conference), Lanutoshi Aier, and president of Langpangkong Kaketshir Mungdang, Imlinok.
Established in 1949, the AST Platinum Jubilee celebration is being held between December 18-20.
